Living in a renovated historic building in Kandern

Ecological wood fibre insulation for roofs, floors and interior walls
Affordable housing and environmentally-friendly construction are not mutually exclusive. In Kandern, Baden-Württemberg, right on the French-Swiss border, Thomas Stocker of Eden Homes GmbH has converted a 180-year-old farmhouse with a coach house into a residential building with nine modern flats. As in the Black Forest, a lot of timber from regional production was used and processed by local partners. To protect the historic structure of the building and guarantee future tenants an optimum indoor climate, the owner opted for insulation with environmentally-friendly wood fibre from Gutex.

The listed main house and barn complex is set back from the main street, within sight of the River Kander from which it takes its name, and is an exemplary example of the region's building tradition. The barn adjoins the main house at right angles; it too has recently been extended. When completed, it will also provide affordable rented accommodation, which has been subsidised by the Rural Development Programme (ELR). A total of nine modern residential units with living space ranging from 40 to 140 square metres will be available in the historic old building from early summer 2024.

Roof renovation for optimum protection against heat and cold

The roofs were renovated using Gutex Thermofibre blown-in wood-fibre insulation in the space between the rafters, and the 35-mm thick pressure-resistant Gutex Multiplex-top under-roof panel as additional insulation on the rafters. The latter forms a stable top layer thanks to its tongue-and-groove joints, and is easy to fit. Gutex insulation panels, which have been proven to be rainproof and windproof, also have excellent heat-storing capacity, providing effective protection against both heat and cold. Like all Gutex insulation materials, they are made from the sustainable raw material wood, are recyclable and have been awarded the "natureplus" eco-label for their harmlessness to construction.

The interior was also completely refurbished and refitted with new lightweight partitions. Here, Gutex Thermoflex flexible insulation batts were clamped without any gaps in the framework. Gutex Thermosafe-wd compression-resistant insulation board was also used for the insulation under the new screed.
